Ready to move features a new body of relief paintings made on a residency in Chennai and presented in a debut solo with Blueprint12, New Delhi. With formal echoes to hard-edge abstraction and Memphis design, they are inspired by the artist’s road trips documenting colourful architecture without architects in Tamil Nadu. Rendered in playful perspective views, the geometric paintings combine the push and pull between surface and depth, digital and manual prototyping, fine-art and house paint, the artist’s hand and trades labour. In doing so, Sellamuthu dialogues with her received knowledge of Eurocentric art and design histories alongside her experience of a flourishing vernacular on home turf.
